Substantive editing looks at the content of the piece, so it works better for short stories and essays than for a chapter of or a complete novel. It focuses on four key pieces:
- Information that needs to be expanded on.
- Information that could be removed.
- Optimizing the flow of the piece.
- Ensuring the piece will fit the tone of the publication.
Edits can be made in Microsoft Word’s comments or track changes, depending on if you prefer suggestions or flat-out changes, or in a separate letter.
The starting cost is $9 per page.
