Substantive Editing

Editor: Diane

Substantive editing looks at the content of the piece, so it works better for short stories and essays than for a chapter of or a complete novel. It focuses on four key pieces:

  • Information that needs to be expanded on.
  • Information that could be removed.
  • Optimizing the flow of the piece.
  • Ensuring the piece will fit the tone of the publication.

Edits can be made in Microsoft Word’s comments or track changes, depending on if you prefer suggestions or flat-out changes, or in a separate letter.

The starting cost is $9 per page.
